Love During Lockup: Meet The Chipps!

The premiere of season three of Love During Lockup will not be gracing our television screens for another few weeks. While “Mama June – Family Crisis” airs in its time slot, many die-hard “bunkies” have been going into Felon Friday withdrawals. Viewers don’t see any familiar faces in a preview of the new season – shown here in an Instagram post by Merrypants.

“Inmate” Chris Chipps is serving his sentence in the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, SD. He was charged with one count of burglary in the second degree and four counts of identity theft. His parole date is listed as June 30, 2025.

Chris Chipps initially tried to appeal his September 2014 conviction with an appeal filed with the appeals court in January 2016. Chris Chipps’ appeal was based on “he did not receive effective assistance of counsel, that his sentences are cruel and unusual, and that there was insufficient evidence to sustain his convictions.” The Supreme Court of South Dakota denied his appeal.

Chris’ rap sheet dates back to 2001, when he was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of underage drinking and driving in Goodhue, MN. The other charges on his rap sheet include assault and grand theft.

Chris was also indicted in September 2018 as one of seventeen inmates convicted of marijuana possession in prison. According to KOTA ABC news,” If convicted of felony possessing marijuana, the inmates could be sentenced to two years in the state penitentiary and a $4,000 fine. The inmates have also been charged with ingesting a substance, which is a misdemeanor.”

Chris’s rap sheet doesn’t include all bad news, however. While in prison, he has turned his time into doing something good for the community. He was part of a prison program that made sensory items for special needs students in school.

Chris also donated money to a little girl from his hometown whose family was struggling with her medical condition and its associated bills. According to Argus Leader, Chris donated $5,000 from his personal funds held by his family. He then asked his family to donate it to the family of Emma Bohon, who suffered from Kawasaki disease “which causes inflammation in the walls of arteries that supply blood to the heart, leading to frequent trips to the Mayo Clinic for treatment. Complications involving a blood disease led doctors to fear that she might have leukemia.”

Mrs. Jada Chipps is a popular content creator on TikTok. She was also featured on an episode of “Love Don’t Judge,” where she talks about her “unusual Chris accessories,” which include a pillow with his photo superimposed on it and a life-sized cardboard cutout of Chris.

Jada’s videos on TikTok chronicle the life of a “prison wife.” She documents her struggles with subjects such as dressing for prison visits and waiting for her husband’s phone calls.

Jada’s hustles include a collaboration with Old School Hats.

Jada pays tribute to her Mr. Chipps on Instagram.

Jada frequently shares pictures of her pets on her IG stories.

Mr. Chipps has his own Instagram account and is also active on social media.

Love During Lockup is set to premiere in July, and Mr. and Mrs. Chipps will soon be gracing viewers’ television screens. It will be interesting to see what their love story will bring!
